Is Hoover Dam your design temple?

September 21, 2011 by

You might be an engineer if … your wristwatch has more computing power than a 486DX2-50 processor, but you’re definitely an engineer if Hoover Dam is your design temple.

Hoover Dam is the destination for the POWER-GEN International 2011 tech tour.

The awesome power of Hoover Dam awaits those who admire this National Historic Landmark. Named one of the Top 10 Construction Achievements of the 20th Century, the past 75 years have seen the dam become one of the most celebrated monuments in America.

Did you know that:

      • The dam and powerplant  are operated and maintained by the US Bureau of Reclamation.
      • There are 17 main turbines in powerplant.
      • The original turbines were all replaced during an upgrade program between 1986 and 1993.
      • The plant has a nameplate capacity of 2,074,000 kilowatts.
      • The power generation part of the plant was completed in 1961.
      • There are fifteen 178000 HP, one 100000 HP, and one 86000 HP Francis-type vertical hydraulic turbines.
      • There are thirteen 130000 kW, two 127 kW, one 61500 kW, and one 68500 kW generators.
      • All machines are operated at 60 cycles.
      • There are also two 2400 kW station-service units driven by Pelton water wheels. These provide electrical energy for lights and for operating cranes, pumps, motors, compressors, and other electrical equipment within the dam and powerplant.

This year there are two tech tours available during POWER-GEN International: Sunday and Monday, December 11 and 12 for $60. Space is limited, register before November 18. (Sorry, security doesn’t allow “day of” registrations.)

Networking Party

July 26, 2011 by

Are you packing dancing shoes? There’s no place to make contacts like the POWER-GEN Int’l 2011 Offsite Networking Party, located at the infamous  Tryst Nightclub in the Wynn Hotel.

Tryst was originally opened as a restaurant when the Wynn Hotel launched in 2005 . The restaurant closed and reopened as the newest creation from Victor Drais from the infamous Drais Nightclub.  Tryst offers club goers the best overall nightclub experience in Las Vegas.

The Decor, ambiance and setting just can’t be beat with the Jewel being a 50ft. waterfall and lake located directly inside of the club. The best quality of TrYst is that there really isn’t a bad seat in the club it has been designed to accommodate everybody which is why it remains such a success in Vegas.

The LA Times calls it “the best-kept non-secret in local night life.” For networking with colleagues or celebrity sightings, don’t miss this event. http://www.power-gen.com
